It was just natural right from the beginning." We’re completely different people and we never really hung around together, but we could always play together. If we got together tomorrow, it would just work. "I mean, we had the same record collections, we liked the exact same kind of music - we could just play. "We could just play instantly," Peters adds. ![]() It was like, 'Well, Tom’s got his wish.' The next day, we sat Tom down and we said, 'Tom, you know, we talked to Dale Peters, another bass player, and you’re free to go.' He goes, 'Wow, thanks man, that’s a load off my mind.' Literally, the following night, Dale was in the slot and we never looked back." It was instantaneously an upgrade, which we never expected. Why don’t you come down tonight after the gig and we’ll play for a while?' And he did and it was magic. We have an unhappy bass player, who I think we’re going to have to replace. "I said, 'Well, there’s a situation here. I was thinking of going back to school,'" Fox recalls. "I said, 'What are you doing? I know the band is not doing well.' He said, 'Yeah, we’ve kind of split up. Peters was drumming at the time, but he'd since picked up the bass - and Fox happened to know he was at loose ends with his own group, the Case of E.T. 'Tom, aren’t you somewhat equally responsible for the music we’re making? What do you want to do?' 'Well, I don’t know, but I can’t take this anymore.'"įortunately, Fox knew just who to call: Dale Peters, who had replaced him in a college band at Ohio State University a few years before. ![]() You know, it was like, he was, I thought, a very fine player. I don’t think I can play it anymore.' Joe and I were blindsided. "He just spilled his guts," Fox tells UCR's Matt Wardlaw of a band meeting called after he and Joe Walsh realized Kriss "hadn’t said shit in six months." Fox remembers Kriss saying: "'I hate this band.

![]() If you want to quickly give the lows a lift without fetching your phone, an old-school bass boost button is also available on the hardware (along with rudimentary volume, music control, power, and LED on/off controls). ![]() The handful of presets didn’t do much for me, but the custom mode offers the familiar sliders that do make a significant impact. If you want to tweak things, the Flare 2 also includes an equalizer system in the app. It’s not the most crystal clear of speakers I’ve tested-probably because 360-degree output can cause audio to bounce all over a room, muddying things up-but for outdoor use, it’s a huge plus. Two 10-watt drivers (with passive radiators) and a listed frequency response of 50Hz to 20kHz might not sound overly impressive, spec-wise, but the Flare 2 can really belt it out. Whether you’re jamming with one speaker or multiples, audio performance is impressive. You’ll need to follow the instructions in the Soundcore mobile app precisely to get this done the included quick start guide is completely useless. I tested a pair of Flare 2 speakers and there’s no question that Part圜ast is the coolest feature, though configuring it involves an unintuitive process of pairing one speaker to your phone, then holding down the Bluetooth pairing button on each speaker in a certain sequence. The six included LED effects are fun, but largely variations on a theme. They don’t operate as a mesh, which likely limits how many you will realistically deploy. The sub-speakers also all need to be within Bluetooth range of the master speaker. You can sync up to 100(!) sub-speakers to a master Flare 2-but note that they all play the same channel you can’t set two speakers to separately handle left/right channel duty. Undoubtedly the biggest new feature is the ability to sync up multiple Flare 2 speakers to play in unison. Lighting at the top and bottom of the Soundcore Flare 2 brings the party (on a small scale). The Flare 2 also has two LED light rings instead of just one-one on the top and one on the bottom-which you can set to pulse, fade, and change hues in tune with your music. ![]() The Flare’s 12 watts of output has been bumped up to 20 watts total, a significant boost that makes an impact. Those wanting more bass but still want a party speaker with lights will want to check out the JBL Pulse 4, which gets louder, has more bass impact and a full-body lightshow but is over twice the price. This review is part of TechHive’s coverage of the best Bluetooth speakers, where you’ll find reviews of competing products, plus a buyer’s guide to the features you should consider when shopping.īut like any good sequel, the Flare 2 has been upgraded where it counts. However, the UE is more rugged and smaller, making it easier to toss in a bag or backpack. Those who don’t care about the minor updates will be happy with the discounted original, which is still available for sale.Ĭompared to the competition, the Flare 2 fits better in the home and sounds better than the UE Wonderboom 2. Minor upgrades like the second LED ring at the top and USB-C charging are nice to have, but not necessary. Everything that made the original great is still here, including sound quality, an excellent mobile app, and an understated yet durable design. The Anker Soundcore Flare 2 is a minor refresh of the already-great Flare. This is a nice feature to have for users who travel with their portable Bluetooth speaker or for days by the pool or campfire when you don't want to hold your phone the entire time. One nice feature of the Flare 2 that many of the competition lacks is speakerphone. However, those looking for more bass response will want to step up to a larger speaker like the JBL Charge 4 or JBL Pulse 4. The BassUp feature is a nice way to get more bass out of the speaker quickly and it isn’t overwhelming. This is expected from small wireless speakers that lack the amperage of larger speakers and the Flare 2 sounds best below 70% volume, which is still plenty loud for a small to medium sized room. The Anker Soundcore Flare 2 gets mighty loud but like the original, the louder the speaker gets, the more sound quality suffers. Tonally, the Anker is slightly warm, making it relaxing to listen to at low to medium volume. Sound quality is great, offering a nice balance across the frequency spectrum. There’s also a basic equalizer within the app, but most users will most likely enjoy the speaker’s default sound or BassUp feature, which has a dedicated button around the back of the speaker. There are several modes to choose from or you can create your own. Additional lighting features can be accessed in the app, allowing you to customize colors as well as reactive lighting. One nice surprise is the excellent Soundcore app, which allows users to update the speaker and control additional features. ![]() SquareArt tem 10M+ downloads no Google Play. With just the pilot on board, the Grasshopper would top out at 85 miles per hour, had a service ceiling of 12,000 feet, and could remain airborne for around three hours. The aircraft had room for one pilot and one passenger and was almost identical to the civilian-market cub, with the exception of a plexiglass skylight and rear windows for improved visibility in combat environments. The Cub was so well suited for the role that the American military would eventually order more than 5,400 of the newly dubbed “L-4 Grasshoppers” for the fight.īut the Grasshopper’s performance and capabilities left a lot to be desired compared to some of the more legendary World War II planes like the acrobatic Spitfire, the powerful P-51 Mustang, or the forward-reaching B-29 Superfortress. But they were just stories, everything subterranean and easy to dismiss, because during his teenage years, Pickens had never felt discriminated against or even disliked. He was already aware of the town’s reputation - a conservative place, an insular place, a white place - and he had heard rumors in high school of police officers intimidating black drivers and of white supremacists meeting in the woods. Pickens, who was Orting’s first black police officer, was fired five days before his one-year probation period ended. Gerry Pickens discusses his current situation and unemployment. For him, Mount Rainier was just a landmark, a snow-capped peak visible for hundreds of miles. He no longer thought about the magma and molten rock churning beneath the trees and glaciers. He had grown accustomed in high school to the evacuation drills and sirens, preparing for a disaster that was always coming, until finally he stopped expecting that it would. ![]() The volcano sometimes made his wife uneasy, but Pickens told her not to worry. He found a rental house outside town, on a dead-end road with a view of the mountains. He missed the Old West feel of the one-block downtown, where the most prominent structure was a playground and where shops had names such as “Bucky’s,” “Wild Rose” and “Big J’s Outdoors.” He missed its green hillsides, its soft-and-steady rain and its two-lane roads that cut through dairy farms and daffodil fields. He had gone to high school a few miles outside town, and he had taken a pay cut to bring his wife and daughter back to the Pacific Northwest. “So happy to be home,” Pickens wrote to a friend that day. Pickens had spent three years policing on the midnight shift in Atlanta, where he had responded to hundreds of the drug crimes, break-ins and violent robberies that were only beginning to encroach on Orting as development spread south from Seattle into the valley. A local politician posted a message on Facebook: “Not a cow town anymore.” The city administrator called Pickens’s hiring “a proud moment for our modern, growing community.” The police chief said he had made “a tremendous value hire” by filling out his staff of 11 with an experienced officer. The one clear thing that first day was that there had been a subtle shift in the foundation, a change in Orting that marked the end of one era and the beginning of another. Pickens had not yet made plans to file a lawsuit unless the town paid him $5 million in damages, nearly twice the annual budget, enough to bury the town. Residents had not yet fractured into hostile groups as the pressure built, erupting onto hateful Internet message boards and petitions demanding the police chief’s resignation. The NAACP hadn’t yet arrived for a news conference. His car had not yet been spray-painted with a racial epithet and a threat. He had not yet been terminated shortly before the end of his standard probationary period. Pickens, 28, had not yet been suspended for an allegation of stealing that was never substantiated. “Congratulations! Welcome to our team,” read a letter that Pickens received with his badge.Įighteen months later, if Orting can still agree on anything about Pickens’s arrival, it is that his first day was also his best day - the one when questions of race and policing still felt like problems for bigger towns. The place once known as “The White City,” in part for its lack of diversity, had hired a black police officer, its first since the town’s founding in 1889. Gerry Pickens stopped downtown to pick up his badge, and only then did it become obvious in Orting that this hire was unlike any the town had made before. Here, in the driver’s seat, came Orting’s newest employee, a police officer in a place where crime had begun to rise. ![]() Here came three more people into one of the state’s fastest-growing communities. The truck was loaded down with a handmade crib, a living room set and a sign designed to hang on a front door. So at first nobody paid much attention in the fall of 2013 when what came winding around the mountain and into the valley was another U-Haul carrying a new family into town. The only question was when it would finally blow. Tension was always building inside the volcano, considered the country’s most dangerous, a pressure that intensified with each foundational shift in the earth. They had sirens for lava, sensors for earthquakes and alarms for the volcanic mudflow that geologists believed would one day bury the town. Life for Orting’s 8,000 residents depended on predicting what would one day come roaring down the slopes of Mount Rainier, 30 miles away. They were so preoccupied with the volcano shadowing their town, with forecasts and evacuation drills, that few people here noticed the other disaster taking shape around them. It’s just that this year, eFootball 2022 elects not to play FIFA’s game of official licenses up to the hilt and conventional triple-A delivery. The proposition will likely be the same as it ever was this year: all the licenses and the polish from EA, or great football sandwiched by comparatively primitive presentation from Konami. But by taking the equivalent of a gap year and releasing a ‘season update’ last time, and now making good on next-gen consoles’ higher specs, eFootball 2022 feels like a big step forwards on the pitch. The bar for impressive, meaningful innovation in annual sports games is, admittedly, quite low. We’ll be looking out for it following the game’s September 30 release. That old bugbear did reappear during my hands-on, though – players on both sides going to sleep in order to let a long ground pass reach its intended target, and the sensation that the game has, however momentarily, taken over to ensure a certain outcome takes place on the pitch. You might not like it when it sends you a goal down, but it feels more like eleven men trying to hold a shape, and less like 11 AI routines. ![]() The right through ball can cause absolute disarray within a back five. Several players can get drawn into a single press, opening gaps elsewhere. If anything, it feels more human and less perfect in its positioning. The systems are familiar, but the way the AI actually puts them into action does feel different. But it’ll take some forward planning and some attention paid to the body shapes of both team-mates and defenders. It might take you three minutes, or three passes. It takes three matches of my hands-on to score a goal, such is the adjustment to eFootball 2022’s new animations, AI routines, and controls. If you’ve been hearing about Konami’s renewed eye on simulation and thinking ‘sounds difficult’, you’re not wide of the mark. They throw the balls back to players all over the place, not just teleporting to bre-baked animation points. Those pre-match cutscenes in dressing rooms and tunnels that previously had a whiff of Uncanny Valley actually did function to get me excited this time.Īnd look, it’s not the biggest addition, but there are ball boys now. Unreal Engine is the most obvious, flexing its binary biceps to render stadium crowds to a standard we’re simply not used to. It’s also worth noting that while plenty of the conversation since eFootball 2022’s announcement has been about what’s been subtracted in terms of licenses and content, there are additions too. Not the ones who denounce Konami from the rooftops with every subsequent data pack and minor gameplay tweak, but players interested in mastering an initially unforgiving simulation. ![]() What I can surmise from the admittedly hazy crystal ball of numerous matches on this build, is that if eFootball 2022 did ship with the sliders as is, much of the community would embrace it. Interceptions, I’m told, won’t be as easy or as frequent, passing is to be tweaked still further, and the overall pace of the action is subject to change. Not just in the usual sense, but that the code’s specifically been tailored to showcase the new aspects of play. Speaking of game speed – let it be noted that the preview build I’m treated to isn’t representative of the finished product. ![]() Picture by 72soul 0 / 25 Protractor Stock Photos by julydfg 0 / 0 Protractor Stock Photography by cookelma 0 / 6 A piece of draft with drafting instrument Stock Photo by Garsya 12 / 91 ruler and protractor Pictures by milagli 2 / 239 protractor Pictures by suslik83 0 / 258 Protractor Picture by jamesstar 0 / 85 Drafting tools protractor t square compass engineering Stock Photography by michaeldb 7 / 4,008 Protractor. This review systematically identifies and summarizes the evidence on the effects of interventions that shape the incentives of firms to adopt new technologies. Interventions in market processes may be necessary to promote the adoption of beneficial technologies. Despite its desirable effects, the process of technology adoption can be quite slow and market failures and other frictions may impede adoption. ![]() The adoption of improved technologies is generally associated with better economic performance and development. With countries worldwide struggling to find an optimal institutional environment for the new services sectors, a good option for South Asia is to experiment with regulatory sandboxes. Governments in South Asia are addressing these new realities, but they face major challenges. To unleash the potential of the new services economy, policy makers should rethink regulations and establish new institutions to enable 1) competition and innovation 2) increased labor mobility and up-skilling, through education and on-the job training 3) the absorption of new services by firms and households. 2) Services firms can drive productivity growth because of innovations that make their own products and other industries more efficient 3) The services sector also generates jobs and helps upgrading skills through on-the-job training. The chapter shows that new services can become the driver of development in South Asia because 1) Services are increasingly tradable and also represent a large part of value added incorporated in the exports of goods. This new services economy comprises not just the ICT sector, but also business and professional services that are increasingly critical inputs into manufacturing and other sectors, and digital platforms that are creating new markets. The importance of services has been increasing over time and got a further boost during the response to the COVID pandemic, when digital technologies became critical. The emergence of a new services economy creates an opportunity for South Asiato shift gears and to move towards a services-led development model. |
